The Drop

Bob Saginowski is a bartender at neighborhood bar in Brooklyn called Cousin Marv’s. Run by the titular Marv, the bar operates as a “drop” bar where criminals launder money. Marv is shown angry at some people honoring the tenth anniversary of a man being murdered. On his way home, Bob finds a badly beaten pit bull inside a garbage can. Nadia, who lives in the adjunct house and sees that the dog is injured, helps Bob patch up the dog. She tells him that because it’s a pit bull, it’ll be put down at the shelter if its owner doesn’t come. Bob agrees to take the dog, while someone watches them from across the street. When Bob goes to church, the congregation is small for him to notice fellow parishioner Detective Torres. Bob picks up the dog and names him Rocco.

The bar is robbed by two gunmen. During the robbery, Bob notices that one of the gunmen has a broken watch. Detective Torres shows up to investigate and Bob tells him about the watch. This upsets Marv, who knows that the Chechens are going to be angry that their money got stolen. Torres shows up to investigate and the next day, Chovka, the face of the Chechen mob wants to know why the cops know about the broken watch, and tells Marv to find the money.

Bob and Nadia begin to grow closer taking care of Rocco. Bob meets Eric Deeds, who comments that Rocco is a nice looking dog. Marv, who lives with his sister Dottie is told by her that a collection agency has been calling because they need to pay for their father’s life support. She suggests that they should take him off life support, to which Marv disagrees. He storms out and meets up with one of the robbers, revealing that Marv orchestrated the robbery.

Deeds shows up at Bob’s house and demands the dog back. Deeds takes Bob’s umbrella and sees himself out. On his way into the bar, a man asking for directions stops Marv, which makes Marv believe he's being followed. He tells Bob that Deeds is a local thug who claims to have killed the man mentioned earlier. They then find a bag near the garbage with the arm with the broken watch and all the money. Bob disposes of the arm and Marv returns the money to the Chechens. They tell him that his bar will be the drop bar for the night of the Super Bowl.

Marv finds the other robber and while driving, Marv tells him that they’re going to rob the place again during the night of the Super Bowl. The trunk pops open again and Marv tells the robber to get out and shut it. When he does, Marv runs him over and kills him.

Deeds stops by and starts asking Bob about Nadia. Bob asks Nadia how she knows Deeds, and she tells him that they used to date. Bob goes home and sees Rocco, but his umbrella is there too, implying that Deeds has been in his house. He confronts Deeds, to which Deeds threatens to tell the police that Bob beat the dog unless Bob pays him $10,000. Marv meets with Deeds to recruit him to rob the bar after the Super Bowl. Marv calls out sick the day of the game, and Bob asks if he’s planning on doing something that they can’t clean up this time. Bob takes the $10,000 hidden in his basement with him to the bar, along with Rocco, for the Super Bowl. He puts it behind the bar next to a pistol. Deeds breaks into Nadia’s home and forces her to go to the bar with him. While he’s there Marv calls him and warns him not to underestimate the soft spoken and gentle Bob. Marv lines his trunk with plastic and heads to the bar, parking and waiting nearby.

Different mob members drop off money throughout the night. Eventually the bar clears except for Deeds and Nadia. Nadia warns Bob that Deeds plans to shoot him. Deeds tells Bob to open the safe during the 90 second window at 2AM. Bob tells the story of the dead man. Marv used to be a loan shark but he had a gambling problem. The man owed him a significant amount of money, but he won a casino jackpot and was able to pay Marv back. In order to cover Marv's own debts, no one could know that he was paid back. Bob was the one who murdered the man, not Deeds who had claimed to have been the killer. Bob then shoots Deeds and tells Nadia that she’s safe now and she can go. Outside, Marv sees the man who asked for directions earlier approaching his car. Accepting fate, the man shoots Marv in the head. The Chechens come and dispose of Deeds’ body. Chovka comes and tells Bob he’s the new Marv.

The next day, detective Torres comes by the bar to question Bob about the disappearance of Deeds. He also tells him that he knows Deeds could not have killed the man because Deeds was in a psychiatric ward at the time. Bob and Rocco go to Nadia’s home so Bob can apologize for the night at the bar. He explains that’s not really who he is anymore. He asks her to walk Rocco with him, and she agrees.
