Guy Trilby (Bateman), a 40-year-old middle school dropout discovers his biological father, who left his unwed mother upon learning of her pregnancy, and enrolls in the largest spelling bee in the USA, The Golden Quill, run by Dr. William Bowman (Hall).
Guy participates for unknown reasons, only mentioning his anger and the possible immaturity of his actions. By finding a loophole which stipulates that participants must have not graduated the 8th grade on or before February 1st, 2011, he attends a regional spelling bee, and progresses to the national competition after confrontations with both the parents of children and the spelling bee hosts. He is accompanied by his reporter (Hahn), a relatively unknown journalist hoping to make a story out of his participation in the bee. On the flight to the national spelling bee, he meets Chaitanya Chopra (Chand). Chaitanya atempts to befriend Guy several times, eventually succeeding. Upon his arrival in Los Angeles, Guy meets the director of the spelling bee (Janney), whom expresses anger at his participation in the bee and places him and his reporter in a cheap hotel. Guy learns that Chaitanya is staying in the same hotel, and he soon gallivants with him around town: stealing food, drinking, and briefly hiring a prostitute. Back at the bee, Guy progresses through the bee through a combination of trickery and brilliance. Guy actively tries to distract and disconcert his fellow competitors, at one point insinuating that he was sleeping with another contestant's mother. Despite tampering of the word list by the director, Guy spells massively complicated words with relative ease, impressing and angering both parents and staff at the spelling bee, including Dr. Bowman. However, the parents petition for his disqualification and the resignation of the director. Guy's reporter discovers Dr. Bowman is Guy's father by calling in an old favor with a government agent, and Guy reveals that he already knew. He elaborates, and shares that that was his prime motivation for entering the bee, to embarrass his father in revenge for abandoning him as a child. Soon before the final stage of the bee, Guy overhears Chaitanya and his father discussing his strategy to win, befriending Guy to make him lose on purpose to let Chaitanya win. Guy storms in and rejects Chaitanya's friendship, despite Chaitanya's pleas that he really wanted to be friends, revealing Guy to be his only true friend. They later sabotage each other: Guy burns Chaitanya's study book, "Todd", and Chaitanya calls the LAPD on Guy at 4am, claiming Guy kidnapped a young girl. Back at the bee, only ten competitors remain. A mother, previously insulted by Guy, attacks him verbally and is subdued by the police on live television. Dr. Bowman is forced to intervene, to his embarrassment, that being the first altercation in the spelling bee ever. Having satisfied his goal, Guy decides to allow Chaitanya to win by deliberately misspelling a word. To prove his friendship, Chaitanya also misspells his word, and they soon begin to argue. Chaitanya and Guy curse at each other, up until Chaitanya kicks Guy in the crotch and proceeds to try to hit Guy with a chair, all the time claiming he was not lying about their friendship. Chaitanya accidentally hits Dr. Bowman with the chair, briefly halting the bee, but the bee soon resumes, Dr. Bowman having judged that they both acted in an equally embarrassing manner. Guy and Chaitanya's standoff continues until Guy tries to get Chaitanya to misspell a word, which Chaitanya corrects angrily, winning him the bee accidentally. As Guy leaves content, Chaitanya agrees to give him half the winnings and names him co-winner of the bee. Guy writes a note to his father explaining his actions, and goes back home. He then resolves his conflict with Chaitanya by buying a police car from an auction with his share of the winnings, and helping Chaitanya chase down local bullies from his school.
